2017 Mica Hill Chardonnay

Tasting Note

A deeply complex nose, with Manchego cheese rind, burnt sage and wet slate sitting on top of light citrus characters.

The palate is alive. Fresh acidity, intertwining savoury and citrus notes, and a flinty finish. A wine that makes the mind dance, this wine breathes and evolves between every glass.

Fruit was handpicked and whole-bunch pressed straight to a 700 L concrete egg without sulphur addition. Here, the juice underwent wild yeast fermentation, and left unsulphured, wild malolactic fermentation.

The wine was racked to a small tank 2 days before bottling in January and bottled with any addition of any kind in its life, and bottled without filtration.

A select pick from the centre of our oldest vines at Burnside Vineyard, this wine draws its name from the exposed outcrops of Mica rock that are inherit to this vineyard.

After desirable conditions during flowering, the summer started cool and wet, slowing down the growing season significantly.

Conditions improved in late February, developing into a perfect Indian summer. The result is whites that are packed with energy and poise, and reds that got the benefit of a long, cool ripening periods; tannin ripeness and complex flavour developments. Alcohols are lower than previous years, even with greater physiological ripeness.
